I came to AO with a good set of grades, an over 200 SAT score, and SAT subject tests already taken…and it was only June. I though that I was ahead of schedule, and I believed that it would not take much further to get me into the top universities in the US. But boy was I wrong. Meeting my counselor for the first time was a definite wake-up call. The university application process was not as simple as I assumed it to be…and with the children of the baby boomers all applying to the same universities, it’s become – quite literally – a dog eat dog world. My introduction to the ins and outs of the university application procedure led me to realise that in all honesty, with the pressures of schoolwork and the rigour of the IB diploma programme, I could not do it alone.
Working with the Admissions Office, and with AO, was definitely a good decision. They are efficient and effective, and nothing is done if it is not to the highest of standards. They deal with all the stresses of the application process: reworking essays, helping out with administrative details, giving interview tips, and inputting ideas for your improvement as a student in other areas…checking every box of the very long list of expectations placed upon ivy-league applicants.
But don’t expect to be cuddled with praise along the way. With the application procedure, honesty is the best policy. The staff of the Admissions Office are brutally honest, but with the ever-nearing application deadline…it’s for your own good. Although I took Sai scoffing at my SAT score (which I believed was relatively high) as insulting at first, it did in the end provide the motivation for me to retake the test even after I had made the decision to put my SAT books away for good. My greatly improved score after Sai’s guidance definitely proved it was worth it. I sincerely have to say I owe my 800 in critical reading and the 12 for my essay to him. Sai knows the ETS like the back of his hand; which definitely helps if you are looking to improve your score.
I have to admit, I came into the counseling sessions a skeptic. I already wrote relatively well, and thought that a bunch of counselors could do little for me. But what I didn’t know was that the admissions essays are like nothing that that I had ever encountered before in school. They require you to sell yourselves to universities, and I quickly realized that there was no better way to do this than to work with someone who knows what the universities are looking for.
As a student in a British school, the US application procedure was one which was as foreign as Swahili! I have to express my gratitude to the Admissions Office, and my consultant in particular, for all the help that they have given me throughout the stressful application process; it was definitely the best decision I made during my application journey.
